Melvin Piper, Nouveau Chocolate’s Insights
ActionCOACH Eric Knam: Tell us a little about Nouveau Chocolate.
Melvin: We’ve been around for 19 years. I’m not the original owner, but we took over about a year and a half ago. We offer Belgian desserts!
Eric: What are a few things you guys sell?
Melvin: Truffles, coffee, tea, ice cream, gifts- we have it all! We also cater to weddings and provide fondue experiences.
Eric: What differentiates you from other companies out there?
Melvin: The fact that we’re always innovating! New flavors and products. We are also the only shop in the area using Belgian chocolate.
Eric: What got you into all things chocolate?
Melvin: I started working here in 2011 and I had known the previous owner since 2008- met her looking for a gift for someone else! So we kept in touch and eventually starting working for her. During that time I fell in love with the shop and the business. I left the job when I graduated from college and told her if she was ever interested in selling the business, I would be interested in purchasing it. She called in 2017 and we started retraining then took over in February of 2019.
Eric: It’s been said that smart people learn from their mistakes and wise people learn from the mistakes of others. What mistakes have you made along the way and how can other entrepreneurs learn from your experience?
Melvin: I haven’t had any real issues being I’m newer to this and we’ve been following the already well-established way of business for the shop. But I would say when it comes to your website, make sure that thing is user friendly. Understand your target market and point it towards them.
Eric: What has made you so successful?
Melvin: Since COVID we’ve started coming up with new things like utilizing Grubhub and online orders from our website. Something we never have done in the past and we’re seeing the benefits of it!
