Counter Top Solutions Greg Strange’s Insights
ActionCOACH Eric Knam: Tell us a little about Counter Top Solutions.
Greg: We started 22 years ago with laminate countertops. After about 5 years of working for them, I decided I would buy the business. Now, for the past 18 years, we’ve been doing granite, not laminate. We also do kitchen and bath remodeling for residential and commercial.
Eric: What differentiates you from other companies out there?
Greg: Our core values and our mission statement. We want to enhance the lives of our customers with our Christian values and beliefs. We dig down deep to figure out why things go wrong or right, so we know more about this industry and we can be the best in the state.
Eric: Who is your target audience?
Greg: 45% end-user, 25% remodelers and new construction and 30% commercial.
Eric: What was the impact that COVID-19 had on your business?
Greg: 3 years previous to COVID, there was a lot of momentum building, we were destined to have a good 2020 and this slowed us down, but did not deter us. People backed out and postponed their projects; however, stayed 4-5 weeks out regardless. So that was still strong and didn’t hurt us as bad as we thought. We were considered essential, so I am very thankful for that.
Eric: It’s been said that smart people learn from their mistakes and wise people learn from the mistakes of others. What mistakes have you made along the way and how can other entrepreneurs learn from your experience?
Greg: Number 1, dealing with a problem customer is essential. The quicker you solve the problem the less expensive it’s going to be for you. Don’t ignore or procrastinate, just deal with it. Number 2, cash is king. If you’re going to be successful, you have to have cash flow.
Eric: Do you have any special offer you’d like to mention?
Greg: 5% discount to veterans and first responders.
