Preferred Office Technologies Alan Dickinson’s Insights
ActionCOACH Eric Knam: Tell us a little about Preferred Office Technologies.
Alan: We are a managed service provider in the office technology industry. We offer document and IT solutions and help companies manage their data as well as their information.
Eric: What has made you so successful?
Alan: I was instilled with a good work ethic from my grandfather and my dad. They’re pretty old school if things go bad- just work harder. I think that has helped us a lot. Being a third-generation, you don’t want to be the guy who ruins the family business! That also drives some success around here.
Eric: What differentiates you from other companies out there?
Alan: For the first 50 or so years of our company, we were primarily involved in office equipment and office supplies. As time and technology evolved, we saw more of a demand for office equipment (fax machines, copy machines, printers). So we started selling and servicing those, which was how we made money for the first 50 years. As we see technology changing now and people are printing less, we have become more involved in IT services. So, we’re more than just an office equipment store, we’re now a one-stop-shop for all office technology.
Eric: What do you like to do for fun?
Alan: Watching my kids play sports and coaching my son’s youth baseball team. I also like to play a little golf!
Eric: It’s said that smart people learn from their mistakes and wise people learn from the mistakes of others. What mistakes have you made along the way and how can other entrepreneurs learn from your experience?
Alan: I have learned don’t get stuck in complacency. Always try to get yourself to the next level!
