ARROW FLOWERS & GIFTS Patsy Terry’s Insights
Action COACH Eric Knam: Tell us a little about Arrow Flower’s & Gifts.
Patsy: We are a floral and gift shop that has been open in the Rose District since 1954. We do floral arrangements and gift baskets. We deliver locally and we’re also able to send flowers all over the world.
Eric: Who would you say is your target audience?
Patsy: Middle age to older people, they’re a large percentage of where our business comes from.
Eric: What differentiates you from other companies out there?
Patsy: We try to tailor all of our designs based on what the customer wants to say with their feelings, it’s not just set arrangements. Our drivers are also very formal; name tags, aprons, and our vans are clearly marked, so we have a professional appearance.
Eric: What has been the biggest impact of COVID-19 on your business?
Patsy: The biggest impact has been our walk-ins since the doors were closed for a period of time. So having an online presence has been a big help with that!
Eric: It’s said that smart people learn from their mistakes and wise people learn from the mistakes of others. What mistakes have you made along the way and how can other entrepreneurs learn from your experience?
Patsy: If I knew I would end up doing this, I would have done an internship with a florist instead of just jumping right in. It really makes life easier when you have someone to mentor you. Also, learning to delegate has always been a weakness of mine. You have to delegate and hold people accountable!
Eric: What is most inspiring to you today?
Patsy: To be able to create a beautiful product that comforts people when they’re sad or rewards them when they’re happy. And it’s so inspiring to have people call and say “you did a great job! Thank you!”
